The Campaign

Getting floating voters in marginal seats to make a demand and take control of an election is an extraordinary idea with enormous potential, so when the media find out about CfD the campaign will get an extraordinary amount of attention.

The campaign needs to be ready for that. Some of the work needed has already been done, the articles used in our Gazettes can easily be made available to others for publication but we are not ready for a social media campaign.

A series of four or five minute videos are being prepared that cover all the important ideas behind the campaign. These will take time to produce but once they are finished they will allow us to get our message across to the people of Wales and Britain, without being reliant on the media.

The campaign will be developed in three stages,

  • We will get supporters from in and around Llanidloes using new editions of the Llanidloes Gazette, personal contacts, the stall we have on the market on Saturdays and a local social media campaign.

  • The Llanidloes Gazette has played a crucial role in explaining our ideas to people in Llanidloes, where the campaign is starting, so we're doing a generic version that can be used in any part of Wales. The quality of the Gazette gives people confidence in CfD and this quality will be maintained. When we move to a new area we write a personal letter to households in our target areas telling them about the campaign. These are followed with a series of issues of our Gazette. The first step will be to extend the campaign to Newton and from there across Montgomeryshire and Powys.

This might seem like a lot of work and it is but we have advantages. Political parties have to appeal to millions of voters. We only have to reach a few thousand people in a handful of constituencies to be effective. Another advantage we have is that it is very easy to get support for what we do, and many hands make light work.

  • A lobbying campaign is being developed that will reach out to the political parties, campaigning organisations and their members.

Our aim is to get the politicians in Cardiff to agree to hold a Welsh referendum on the introduction of our systems here, before the next election. Once this has been agreed we will call the campaign off and the election can go ahead as normal.

The four ideas that underpin Campaign for Democracy are

  • Politics is the pursuit of power over others and so politics is inherently immoral.

  • An equality of power between people is a firm base on which successful societies can be built.

  • Most of us have much in common but we also have differences. Both are the product of evolution and both have been essential for human success.

  • The only legitimate system of government is one in which the people are the sovereign power.
